In spite of the constraints and difficulties created mainly by the previous UDF Government in the history of development of transport sector in the State, the present LDF Government could initiate meaningful measures for giving a new impetus for development in the transport sector. More than 600 buses were added to the fleet of KSRTC and more 5000 appointments were made through PSC. Twenty AC buses with all State-of-the-art facilities were introduced. Road Safety Rules were strictly enforced. Transparency in Motor Vehicles Department was achieved through computerisation. With the help of effective measures Motor Vehicles Department was made corruption free. Water transport sector was modernised during the two years of LDF Government. The functioning of all government presses including KBPS improved. They were made viable by entrusting them with the printing of all Government publications.

Modernisation in Motor Vehicles Department
Radar system was installed on selected roads to fix those who drive vehicles aimlessly and at excessive speed. In this financial year, more radar systems will be installed. Central Government gave sanction for starting a Driver Training Institute with all modern facilities. A project envisaged to receive 70 percent of the expenses as Central aid will be established in a 25 acre campus handed over to Motor Vehicles Department by KSRTC at Edappal in Malappuram. The project will be started in 2008 itself. In order to make vehicle testing effective and faultless Department has set upon starting computerised vehicle testing centres.

Motor Vehicles check posts need urgent modernisation. One of the important sources of Government income the 17 check posts in the State are not having sufficient facilities for tax collection. So the Government is considering the need to equip these check posts with weighbridge facilities. NATPAC has submitted a project report for the same on the basis of detailed study.

For effective implementation of laws in the transport sector and to accelerate revenue collection an allocation of Rs. 42 lakhs has been made in the budget for purchase of vehicles.

One Thousand Buses for KSRTC
For the first time in the entire history of KSRTC steps were taken to purchase thousand buses on the basis of open tender. Bus body making is going on in five workshops of KSRTC and 606 buses have already been put into service. It is after seven years that bus bodywork is restored to KSRTC workshops. The corporation could save Rs. 2.5 lakh per bus body thanks to this change. The employees of these workshops could be reactivated.  For the transport of diesel from oil companies 6 tanker lorries were also purchased
